Buck drives 500 feet, 1000 feet, a mile, past the curve, left curve—on the right side of the road it’s all thick palmetto scrub; there is nowhere to pull over. It’s a godforsaken place. He never bought property here for that reason. He finds a driveway. He flings himself out of the car. Donald cannot be roused.

Buck wonders if he himself is alive.

The pavement is still warm. Heat comes off his car. Too much heat. He pats himself down—he hasn’t got what he needs, and he can’t shake that feeling.

Crisp and fast, Buck runs back up the road, to the rocks, which seem red to him. They aren’t there; he can’t see the car. It’s twelve feet deep and rocky here. This side of the island gets the weather. There aren’t rocks. Then it’s a dock, a tethered boat, and then he can’t run anymore and he can’t see. He can hear the sea. He kneels in the road.

What the hell. Is Geno back now at his ranch, having a good brandy, the women passing salted nuts, Mim playing the piano, suggesting strip poker? Are he and Donny missed, or not at all? Did he see Geno’s car flip sideways and disappear, like a small plane, over this curve. He saw something.

In his mind he is talking to a cop. “I saw the car swerve—yes, out of control—to the right. It was too far to the right. That’s when he overcompensated. My goddamn brother. ”

That’s water. That’s all black Matlacha Gulf of Mexico rocky bottom water, deep, rocky, and deep. That’s what he’s looking at.

Buck listens. He doesn’t hear cars.
